EC2: Thoughts

Does anyone know of an investment bank that is using EC2? Likewise for hedge funds? I suspect hedge funds are more like to consider using EC2 due to there size and a more open mind to using technology. Gigaspaces is used by a number of banks. GigaSpaces-EC2 is obviously an easy route into EC2 for financial GigaSpace projects. The biggest problem I see with using EC2 within an investment bank is getting security to sign-off on its usage. Assuming EC2’s security wasn’t an issue for a bank, I suspect a number of projects could reduce their budgets, reduce the data centre headaches, and improve their redundancy and scalability by going down the EC2 road.

So to the question, when is Microsoft going to resolve its licensing mechanism so Amazon can offer a Windows Amazon Machine Image (AMI) by the hour? Seems to me Microsoft is missing the whole concept of the cloud without an hourly licensing mechanism. I suppose I could also try and convince a bank to run their time series analysis service on Mono in EC2.

  1. Hi, great questions. Drop me a note (you have my email) and we can talk offline.

  2. Matt — I think it’s a bit like Salesforce.com. In the beginning everyone thought no company would put its valuable lead and customer information outside the firewall. The service matures and people get used to the idea. Thanks for the GigaSpaces mention.
