My iOS 4 Update Journey
Last night whilst in New York I decided to upgrade my iPhone 3G to iOS 4. Unforrtunately during the night as iOS 4 was being download by iTunes the hotel internet WiFi/internet went down, leaving my phone in an “interesting” state. But slighly surprisingly, on finally getting an internet connection, iTunes moved the iPhone into recovery mode, and then restored the phone from the backup. Nice.

Installing iOS4 on my iPhone 3GS has mostly been a negative experience. It’s slow, jerky, unstable and doesn’t have the iPhone 4 hardware to back some of the software features it offers like six axis motion and hd video. The biggest surprise was the lack of true multitasking in that an application can only multitask if it explicitly supports saving state which means you can’t leave a game running in the background in pause mode until the game supports this. I suppose it’s to save battery life. Android I believe does support true multitasking. The unified inbox and threaded conversations as well as multiple exchange accounts are fantastic though albeit quite late. Overall a superbly fertile market to develop on but iOS4 is best experienced on iPhone 4.
