Book: The Nomadic Developer
Should this book be a requirement for all consultants? At a minimum:
- Page 13 – Consulting Firm Economics 101
- Page 202 – Build Your Brand
- Page 107 – Always Be Learning
- Page 115 – Be Easy to Work With
- Page 117 – Energy, ENERGY, Energy. Given that an MVP wrote this book I suppose he couldn’t use Developer, Developer, Developer
- Page 231 – Avoiding Career-Limiting Moves. Chapter 9 offers some interesting view, I feel sad for anyone with page 238 issue.
- Page 241 – Pricing Yourself Out of the Market. Like the housing market, you need to understand the “street” you work in price point
- Page 251 – Career-Limiting Move Category #6: Envy. I’ve seen to many people move for this, which leads me to the stand quote “the grass is not greener, its just a different shade”
- Page 304 – Team In-fighting. Another classic issue…..
This book also provides a view on consultancy categorization (page 29) in the form of the “Seven Deadly Firms”:
- BOZO Consulting
- FEAR Consulting
- The Body Shop
- CHEAP Consulting
- Personality Cult Consulting
- Smelzer and Melzer Accounting
- “Push the SKU” Consulting
Which brings us nicely to “The Players” (page 73)
, of which I think Derik Whittaker’s comment regards “recruiters….compared to drug dealers” is a fall off the chair laughing statement.
Chapter 4 (page 97) “Getting In: Ten Unstated Traits That Technology Consulting Firms Look For” offers some interesting thought. Tip #1, Appearance, as in all walks of life, is unfortunately relevant.
In summary, a worth while read
