Rules of Engagement

Here are a few best practices I’ve used when joining an existing development team:

  • Work with the team, don’t fight them
  • Lead from the front
  • People are scared of new buzz words
  • When introducing new “things” make sure you have fact to back up your ideas, and presentations for people to take away and read
  • Introduce XP/Agile techniques as soon as possible (TDD etc)
  • Check the development environment, and improve where appropriate (automate, wiki, issue tracking)
  • Move to SCRUM – daily standup’s work!
  • Deliver in iterations – XP/Agile
  • Build a network of people who can help at the client
  • Broadcast your successes
  • Retrospective!
  • Be positive
  • Go to work with you head up high, and a smile on your face
  • Be aware of the food chain, and the politics
